Welcome to Why Japanese Say! I created this site to help English speakers understand the Japanese words, phrases, and slang they actually hear in anime, manga, conversations, and everyday Japanese life — not just the textbook version.
Learning a language from a textbook can only take you so far. What made the biggest difference for me was digging into the “why” behind an expression: where it comes from, the image it evokes for a native speaker, and how it actually gets used in real conversation. That is the approach I try to bring to every article on this site.

Why I Write This Site
I have spent a great deal of time studying Japanese and immersing myself in Japanese media and culture, and I still remember how confusing it was to find clear, practical explanations in English.
